Women

Next win

The VfL women win the top-of-the-table clash with Freiburg and can claim the title on Sunday.

Title-bound: The women’s team from VfL Wolfsburg secured their next win in the Allianz Frauen-Bundesliga, in the rescheduled game from matchday 18. In front of a crowd of 1,508 spectators in the AOK Stadion, the Lady-Wolves beat SC Freiburg 2-0 (2-0) and thus secured their UEFA Women᾽s Champions League qualifying place for the coming season. In addition, a win on Sunday, May 13th (kick-off 14:00 CEST – live on Sport1, Telekom Sport and DFB-TV) in the home game against SGS Essen would guarantee the Green-Whites their fourth league title. The goals against the third-placed side in the table were scored by Pernille Harder (5’) and Ewa Pajor (33’).

"Must pay the team a compliment"

VfL head coach Stephan Lerch: We saw two very different halves. In the first-half, we were particularly good when in possession, combined well on the attack and created some good openings. Of course it played into our hands that we scored such an early goal – which gave us a real push during that phase. In the second-half, Freiburg put on an exceptional amount of pressure. We didn’t manage to calm our play and we allowed them to find ways through. During that phase, we had the luck on our side. Our mentality was made clear in how we then stood strong and went on to win the game. I must pay the team a compliment – we are now playing our third fully packed week of football in succession and in the odd situation, we maybe lacked a little freshness. On the whole, I am very satisfied, as we secured a win against a very strong opponent.
