Exactly one week after the traditional start to pre-season at the AZ/WAZ match in Gifhorn, head coach Tobias Strobl’s side face their next test. This time, they take on Regionalliga outfit FSV Schöningen. Kick-off at the Elmstadion is at 3pm on Saturday. A varied programme of entertainment awaits visitors from 1.30pm onwards.
Tickets available online and at the gate
Around 2,000 tickets for the Wolves’ regional friendly have already been sold. While there will be a ticket office at the ground in Schöningen, anyone wishing to avoid queues is advised to secure their tickets online in advance.
FSV Schöningen have enjoyed a remarkable rise in recent years. In 2020, the club from the Helmstedt district earned promotion from the Bezirksliga to the Landesliga, before stepping up to the Oberliga Niedersachsen two years later. After finishing as runners-up in the 2024/2025 season, FSV secured promotion to the Regionalliga Nord, where they successfully retained their status at the first attempt by finishing 14th.
Plenty of familiar faces
Among Schöningen’s promotion heroes was Daniel Reiche, who won the Bundesliga title with the Wolves in 2009 and brought his playing career to an end this summer. The current FSV squad also includes a number of players who previously came through the Green-and-Whites’ academy or even featured for the club’s former U23 side. There are further VfL connections too: Brian Präger (19, central midfielder) is the son of VfL legend Roy Präger, while goalkeeper Justin Kick (31) is the son of former Wolfsburg keeper Burkhard Kick, who helped the Green-and-Whites win promotion to the 2. Bundesliga in 1992.
Malick Sanogo, the son of former Bundesliga professional and Ivory Coast international Boubacar Sanogo, is also part of the Schöningen squad. The player with the greatest professional experience is Brian Behrendt: the defender made 146 appearances in the 2. Bundesliga, the majority of them for Arminia Bielefeld.
