New signing from Kiel

Alexander Bernhardsson strengthens the Wolves’ attack.

VfL Wolfsburg have secured the services of Sweden international Alexander Bernhardsson. The 27-year-old right winger joins from fellow Bundesliga 2 side Holstein Kiel and has signed a contract with the Green-and-Whites until 30 June 2029.

“Exciting qualities”

“Alexander is versatile in attack and has exciting qualities with his pace, explosive acceleration and agility. Those attributes make him particularly difficult to defend against one-on-one, and he can cause problems time and again. As a left-footer, he also gives us further options in attack. In Kiel’s first two games of the season, he has already demonstrated his ability to create goals for others. We’re therefore delighted that he has chosen VfL despite interest from several big-name clubs,” said sporting director Pirmin Schwegler.

At the 2026 World Cup with Svanberg

Bernhardsson was born and developed as a player in Sweden, where he also made the step up to professional football. In January 2024, the 1.84-metre-tall attacker moved abroad for the first time, joining Holstein Kiel from six-time Swedish champions IF Elfsborg. Bernhardsson made a total of 57 competitive appearances for Kiel, including 19 in the Bundesliga, scoring 15 goals and providing 14 assists.

Bernhardsson has also gained valuable experience at international level. Alongside Mattias Svanberg, he was part of Sweden’s squad for the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico. The 27-year-old started all three group matches. Bernhardsson has made 14 appearances for the Swedish national team in total.

“I’m very happy that the move is now complete and that I’m here. When I heard about VfL’s interest, it was something special for me. Then, in my conversations with the people at the club, I was convinced by the direction VfL want to take. That’s why it quickly became clear to me that this move to Wolfsburg was the right step for me,” said Bernhardsson.
