New arrival from Scandinavia

Smilla Vallotto has signed for VfL Wolfsburg.

VfL Wolfsburg Women are delighted to announce the arrival of Swiss international midfielder Smilla Vallotto, who will officially link up with the She-Wolves on 1 July. The 21-year-old, who will wear the number 14 shirt, joins the Green-and-Whites from Swedish top-flight club Hammarby IF on a contract until 30 June 2028.

“Proud and humble”

“Playing for a club as great as VfL from this summer makes me feel proud and humble at the same time,” said Vallotto. “My goal is to support the team as best I can in midfield through hard work and creativity. It’s also important to me to bring joy to our fans. I can’t wait to start this new chapter in my career.”

“Creative midfielder”

“Smilla is a creative attacking midfielder,” added VfL’s director of women’s football Ralf Kellerman, who is delighted with the She-Wolves’ latest acquisition from Sweden. “With her abilities, I’m certain she can help our team from day one. At the same time, we want to give her the opportunity to realise her full potential with us.”

22 caps for Switzerland

Vallotto was born in Geneva, Switzerland but grew up in Norway and also holds Norwegian and Italian citizenship. After initially joining the academy of Norwegian top-flight side Stabaek IF, she was handed her debut in the Toppserien in a game against LSK Kvinner on 3 July 2021. The attacking midfielder made 58 competitive appearances for Hammarby since signing for the Swedish club in summer 2023, including seven in the UEFA Women’s Champions League last term.

Vallotto also boasts considerable international experience despite her young age. She made her senior Switzerland debut in a Nations League match against Italy on 22 September 2023 and has since gone on to win 22 caps for the Nati, with the majority of her recent appearances coming as a starter.
