Centre-back Hauke Wahl joins from FC St. Pauli.

VfL Wolfsburg have secured another new signing for the upcoming season. Hauke Wahl, the 32-year-old defender, joins the Green-and-Whites from FC St. Pauli. The Hamburg-born centre-back has signed a contract with the Wolves running until 30 June 2029. “Hauke is an excellent fit for the profile we were looking for. We are gaining an experienced defender who has consistently delivered strong performances at a high level in recent years. He is someone whose experience brings great composure and who stands for defensive stability. On top of his footballing qualities, he also possesses leadership skills,” said VfL sporting director Pirmin Schwegler.

“After the very positive discussions with Dieter Hecking, Pirmin Schwegler and Tobias Strobl, it quickly became clear to me that I wanted to take this step,” said Hauke Wahl. “Even though the club suffered relegation, VfL Wolfsburg remains a major club in my eyes. I’m delighted that the move has gone through and I’m looking forward to joining training from the very start this week and getting to know my new surroundings.”

Almost 400 appearances across Germany’s top three divisions

Hauke Wahl’s footballing roots lie in Schleswig-Holstein. After spending his early years with Witzhaver SV and TSV Trittau, he moved to a sports academy in Schwerin at the age of 13. From local club Eintracht Schwerin, he went on to Dynamo Dresden before joining Holstein Kiel at U19 level. It was with the Storks that the 1.89-metre defender turned professional. He moved to second-division side SC Paderborn in 2015 and then joined FC Ingolstadt a year later, spending a brief spell on loan at 1. FC Heidenheim. In 2018, Wahl returned to Holstein Kiel for a further five years, serving as team captain for most of that period, before pulling on the FC St. Pauli shirt from 2023 onwards. He made 105 competitive appearances for the Kiezkicker, scoring four goals. Overall, Wahl has made 376 appearances across the Bundesliga, 2. Bundesliga and 3. Liga to date.
