VfL Wolfsburg and Academy DirectorMichael Gentner will be going their separate ways with immediate effect. Both parties agreed on Monday morning to terminate their existing contract by mutual consent. The 44-year-old joined the Wolves from VfB Stuttgart four and a half years ago and was responsible for implementing a holistic playing philosophy as well as the sustainable development of young talent. VfL will announce details regarding his successor in due course.
Change as part of the club’s new direction
“We would like to thank Michael for his dedicated and successful work over the past few years. However, as part of the club’s overall new direction, we have mutually agreed to end our collaboration in order to bring fresh impetus to our academy as well,” said Managing Director for Sport Dieter Hecking.
Four and a half years as a Wolf
Gentner had been in charge of the sporting operations of the VfL Academy since January 2022. During his tenure, the Young Wolves celebrated, among other achievements, the U17 runners-up title (2023), reaching the DFB Junior Cup final (2026), numerous titles at younger age-group levels, and the Bundesliga debuts of several academy players. Prior to his move to Wolfsburg, the Swabian native spent 18 years at VfB Stuttgart. He initially worked as a youth coach before later heading the academy, while also serving as interim head coach and Sporting Director of the club’s second team.
