Lower Saxony derby in women’s DFB Cup

The VfL Ladies will meet Hannover 96 in the second round of the DFB Cup.

The early part of the VfL Wolfsburg Ladies’ 2018/19 schedule continues to take shape. After being drawn against Icelandic champions Thor/KA in the UEFA Women’s Champions League on Friday and with the Allianz Women’s Bundesliga fixture list being announced in July, the Green-Whites now know who they’ll play in the second round of the DFB Cup. The holders received a bye for the first round and will begin their title defence against Hannover 96, newcomers in the Oberliga (the fourth tier of German women’s football).

First competitive game of the season

The match at Hannover, which will take place on either 8 or 9 September, will be the first competitive game of the season for the team. “It’s a local derby," said head coach Stephan Lerch. "Hannover 96 against VfL Wolfsburg certainly has a nice ring to it. We’re obviously looking forward to the tie and it's also good that we don’t have far to travel.” The VfL Ladies' objective remains the same as ever. “It’s glamour tie for Hannover, so they’ll be really up for it. We’ll be expected to progress to the next round, though,” concluded Lerch.
