Last-minute win in Cologne

VfL Women edged out Köln 2-1.

VfL Women claimed a narrow 2-1 victory in the dying seconds against 1. FC Köln on Matchday 3 of the Google Pixel Women’s Bundesliga. The She-Wolves had more of the chances at the Franz-Kremer-Stadion in Cologne but failed to turn that into an advantage until the final minute of stoppage time, when Camilla Küver’s header clinched the three points. Lineth Beerensteyn had earlier levelled for the Green-and-Whites at the end of the first half.

The She-Wolves must recover quickly as they’re back in action on Wednesday, when SV Werder Bremen visit the AOK Stadion on Matchday 4 of the Google Pixel Women’s Bundesliga (kick-off 19:00 CEST).

Goals

  • 1-0 Imping (38’): The first goal of the evening goes to the hosts. Carlotta Imping suddenly finds herself in space on the right wing and curls the ball into the far top corner from around 16 metres. VfL keeper Stina Johannes has no chance.

  • 1-1 Beerensteyn (45’): The She-Wolves respond quickly to the blow. Köln are able to clear Beerensteyn’s first ball but then Popp does well to set up the Dutchwoman, who heads in the deserved equaliser.

  • 1-2 Küver (90’+7): Küver is the hero for the She-Wolves with her first competitive goal in the final minute of stoppage time! The imposing centre-back rises high from Janou Levels’ corner to head in the winner.

Reaction

Stephan Lerch: “We’ve seen overall in the first few matchdays of this season that the games are very close and details can make the difference. We’re therefore very happy that we managed to take the three points here in the end. I’m very pleased with the way we approached the game. In my view, we had Köln under control for the most part and defended the transitions well. I also have to give the team credit for how they believed in themselves until the end. Of course, we need to work on our chance conversion and getting a bit more control and clarity into our game, but the result and the victory are what count first and foremost today.”
