Keep the run going

Everything you need to know ahead of the home match against second-placed Freiburg.

After the World Cup in Qatar and the unusually long winter break that came with it, the Wolves will finally be back in action this coming Saturday, 21 January (kick-off 15:30 CET). Head coach Niko Kovac’s men are at home to SC Freiburg at the Volkswagen Arena as part of Bundesliga Matchday 16 as they look to hone in on a European spot.

They will have their work cut out for them, however, with the visitors currently flying high and occupying second spot in the league.

Facts and figures

  • On a good run: Wolfsburg are unbeaten in eight Bundesliga matches, winning five of them including the last four in a row.

  • Solid in defence: In those last four wins, the Green-and-Whites conceded the grand total of just one goal.

  • Little to choose between them: Wolfsburg and Freiburg have met 36 times in the Bundesliga, with SCF having their noses in front – but only just. Freiburg have won 14 of the matches between the two, VfL 12 and the remaining 10 were draws.

  • Recent form favours Freiburg: Last season it was SCF who won both clashes between the two sides. Indeed, the Wolves have come out on top in just one of the past eight encounters, back in January 2021 when they ran out 3-0 winners at home.

  • Visitors enjoying a great season: Christian Streich’s team have picked up no fewer than 15 wins across all competitions this season, with five draws and just three defeats.
