Jenz hoping for return in VfL reunion

Moritz Jenz is back in Wolfsburg on Sunday – with Mainz 05.

Moritz Jenz made 23 competitive appearances for VfL Wolfsburg before moving to Mainz on loan over the summer. The centre-back played the full 90 minutes for his new club across six consecutive games before a muscle injury curtailed his run in the team.

Ahead of returning to the Volkswagen Arena on Sunday as Mainz visit VfL on Matchday 13, the 25-year-old discusses his injury, aims for the season and keeping in touch with his colleagues in Wolfsburg.

Moritz Jenz, you joined Mainz on loan at the start of the season. How have you settled in so far?

Moritz Jenz: “Really well. The team welcomed me warmly and I like the city and the people here as well. After a muscle injury I’ve been among the substitutes of late, but I’m giving everything in training to get my chance. When that happens, I want to use it.”

How much contact do you have with the Wolfsburg team? Have you been in touch before this game?

Moritz: “Yes, I’m still in regular contact with the team. But I think it’ll be a little quieter in that regard before Sunday’s game [laughs].”

Your Wolfsburg team-mate Ridle Baku owns Kelly’s Fresh Kitchen in Mainz. Have you paid his restaurant a visit yet?

Moritz: “I actually enjoy their food regularly because they provide our team catering once a week. I can only recommend everyone to go there because the food is healthy and it tastes really good.”

What personal aims have you set yourself this season?

Moritz: “To be as consistent as possible in as many games as possible, and to help the club and the team achieve our aims.”

Mainz are currently unbeaten in five Bundesliga matches. What is the team’s objective for 2024/25?

Moritz: “At Mainz the primary aim is to stay up. We’ve managed to pull well clear of the relegation places. As soon as we’ve secured our Bundesliga ticket for 2025/26, then we can start dreaming bigger.”

You were recently sidelined with muscular complaints. What are your chances of returning to the pitch this weekend?

Moritz: “We only find out the starting line-up shortly before kick-off, so I don’t know what the coach will decide. I’ll keep training hard and will be ready.”

How do you feel ahead of returning to the Volkswagen Arena on Sunday?

Moritz: “I’m especially looking forward to seeing a lot of familiar faces again.”
