There were mixed results for the nine VfL Wolfsburg players involved in international matches on Thursday and Friday. While Jakub Blaszczykowski marked his record-breaking 103rd cap with a goal, Ntep celebrated his first appearance for Cameroon. Elsewhere, Felix Uduokhai and the Germany Under-21 side booked their place in the U21 EURO finals.
Kuba’s goal in landmark match not enough
Having drawn level with Michael Zewlakow as Poland’s most-capped player during the last international break, Blaszczykowski now has the record for himself after making his 103rd appearance on Thursday. The VfL midfielder came on in the 63rd minute of his country’s UEFA Nations League clash against Portugal with his side trailing 3-1. After Krzystof Piatek had given Poland an early lead, Andre Silva and an own goal from Kamil Glik gave the Portuguese the advantage going into half-time. Bernardo Silva made it 3-1 after the break before Blaszczykowski reduced the deficit with a superb long-range volley in the 77th minute.
Belgium were also in Nations League action but goalkeeper Koen Casteels sat on the bench as a brace from Romelu Lukaku secured a 2-1 victory over Switzerland.
Debut win for Ntep
Cameroon consolidated their place at the top of Group B in Africa Cup of Nations qualification courtesy of a 1-0 win at home Malawi. Ntep came on in the 61st minute for Clarence Seedorf’s side, just one minute before Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting scored the only goal of the game.
John Anthony Brooks and the US national team were beaten 4-2 by Colombia in a friendly. Bayern Munich’s James Rodriguez opened the scoring for the Colombians but goals shortly after half-time from Kellyn Acosta and Hannover 96 striker Bobby Wood briefly turned the game around, before Carlos Bacca (56’), Radamel Falcao (74’) and Miguel Borja (79’) settled the score.
Turkey were also in friendly action, with Wolves midfielder Yunus Malli coming on in the 65th minute during their 0-0 draw against Bosnia-Herzegovina.
