Insightful friendly in front of a record crowd

The She-Wolves suffered a 2-0 defeat against 1. FC Union Berlin at the AOK Stadion.

Following the fan festival on Sunday afternoon, 2,728 fans flocked to the AOK Stadion in glorious sunshine to watch VfL Wolfsburg Women’s match against 1. FC Union Berlin, setting a new attendance record for a friendly.

The result did not go the Green-and-Whites’ way, however, as they lost 2-0 to the promoted side. Nevertheless, the She-Wolves strung together a number of promising moves and can take several lessons from the game as they continue their pre-season preparations. They will work in Wolfsburg as normal in the coming week before heading to Weimarer Land for a training camp on Sunday 17 August.

Goals

  • 0-1 Weidauer (20’): Naika Reissner scurries down the left towards the VfL penalty area and lays the ball off into the middle for Sophie Weidauer, who strokes the ball into an empty net with Stina Johannes a long way out of her goal.
  • 0-2 Bauereisen (88’): Union’s Lisa Heiseler delivers a corner from the right high into the penalty area. Nele Bauereisen meets it at the front post and heads Union 2-0 up.

Reaction

Stephan Lerch: “The result is frustrating for us, of course. Union were clinical with their chances, whereas we didn’t take ours. We need a different tempo and more precision in our game, and we’ll work on that as we continue our preparations.”
