Impressive win over Bremen

The She-Wolves earned a 4-2 home victory against Werder.

VfL Wolfsburg Women produced a strong performance to beat SV Werder Bremen 4-2 on Wednesday evening. The 2,715 spectators at the AOK Stadion for the Google Pixel Women’s Bundesliga Matchday 4 encounter watched a game largely dominated by VfL, for whom Ella Peddemors (30’), Janou Levels (52’), Svenja Huth (84’) and Alexandra Popp (90’+4) got on the scoresheet – the latter netting her 150th Bundesliga goal.

The Green-and-Whites now have two days to recover and prepare for their upcoming DFB Cup match away to ATS Buntentor on Saturday 27 September (kick-off 13:00 CEST).

Goals

  • 1-0 Peddemors (30’): Svenja Huth crosses from the right into the middle, where she finds Levels, who skilfully lays the ball off for Peddemors. The Dutch attacker feints past a defender and fires low into the net for VfL’s deserved opener.

  • 2-0 Levels (52’): Cora Zicai drives forward towards the penalty area. Levels’ shot takes a deflection off Bremen’s Chiara D’Angelo and flies in, giving Levels her first competitive goal for the She-Wolves.

  • 2-1 Mühlhaus (pen. 82’): The visitors are awarded a penalty after a foul inside the box. Larissa Mühlhaus takes it and powers the ball into the net to pull a goal back.

  • 3-1 Huth (84’): Huth dribbles her way through Bremen’s defence and scores VfL’s all-important third goal.

  • 4-1 Popp (89’): Huth delivers a cross from the right into the penalty area. Popp’s initial header hits the inside of the post, but the captain reacts quickest to the rebound and prods the ball over the line from close range for her 150th Bundesliga goal.

  • 4-2 Papai (90’+4): The game becomes somewhat hectic again just before the end and Emoeke Papai escapes the VfL defence to reduce the deficit to 4-2.

Reaction

Stephan Lerch: “We improved as the match wore on, were dominant and produced our best performance of the season. In the end we deserved to get the win.”
