“I love defending”

An interview with new VfL signing Guro Bergsvand.

Defender Guro Bergsvand is another new addition to the VfL Women squad, bringing with her plenty of international experience. In her first interview in green and white, the 31-year-old spoke about her goals with VfL, her style of play, her links with former She-Wolf Caroline Graham Hansen – and even her TikTok account.

Guro, this is your first time here in Wolfsburg. How does it feel?

Guro Bergsvand: “It feels great! It’s wonderful to finally be here, to get to know everything and to meet people. I’m really pleased!”

What made you choose VfL?

Guro: “Wolfsburg is a big name in women’s football – it’s a club with an impressive history and success at domestic and international level. This move is an incredible opportunity for me. I’m looking forward to making my contribution out on the pitch and helping the club remain successful in Germany and in the Champions League.”

You know some players who have already played in Wolfsburg. Did you speak to any of them about VfL?

Guro: “Yes, Caroline Graham Hansen is one of my closest friends and she had lots of positive things to say about Wolfsburg – how professional the club is, how great the people are and how good her own experiences and memories were. Her impressions definitely confirmed my decision.”

Two years ago, you moved to England, and now you’ve come to Germany. Why did you decide to change countries again?

Guro: “I had a great time in England and really enjoyed playing there. At the same time, women’s football in Germany has been well established for a long time. The Bundesliga is a tough league with a good standard and that is exactly what attracted me to it. Apart from that, I’m looking forward to learning German and getting to grips with the culture here.”

Have you set yourself any goals for your first year with VfL?

Guro: “I want to help the club remain successful and have a good season, and continue to develop as a team. The squad will have lots of new players and I hope that we can see that as an opportunity. My goal is for us to fulfil our potential, win lots of matches and have a good year together.”

What can our fans expect from you?

Guro: “I love defending and keeping clean sheets. I love going into challenges, I fight for my team and I like to play attractive football. The fans can rely on me to always give 100 per cent out on the pitch.”

And what are you like off the pitch?

Guro: “I’d describe myself as a happy, positive person. It’s important for me to bring a good energy to those around me and to make sure that they’re all in a good place. The fans also play an important role for me in this – they’re a huge part of the game, and that’s why it’s critical for me to show them how much they mean to us.”

One last question: is it true that you’re on TikTok a lot? Your account would seem to suggest that…

Guro: “Only with Caroline (laughs)! No – it comes and goes, you might say. I go through phases where I don’t post anything for weeks – but basically I really enjoy good TikTok content.”
