At the DFB headquarters in Frankfurt on Monday afternoon, the semi-final draw was made for the semi-finals of the women’s DFB-Cup. The Bundesliga leaders from VfL Wolfsburg can look forward to home tie in the hunt for a cup final place, when they play host to SGS Essen (Sunday, April 15th, 15:15 CET). In the second semi-final, FC Bayern Munich play host to 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam.
"Eager to travel to Cologne"
Ralf Kellermann, Sporting director of women’s football at VfL, was satisfied with the draw and sees Wolfsburg in the role of favourites. "We’ve won the DFB-Cup the last three seasons in a row, so naturally we are going into the game as favourites. However, four of the top six teams in the Bundesliga are in the semi-finals and Essen proved what they are capable of against Freiburg. Aside from that, it is just one game and anything is possible. Our goal is naturally a fourth successive final participation – that means a great deal to us! We are very eager to travel to the Cologne. It’s a great experience and a wonderful advertisement for women’s football."
VfL head coach Stephan Lerch also commented on the draw: "We are delighted to have been drawn at home. A cup semi-final is an all-or-nothing match. I’m expecting a clash at eye-level, because both sides will be extremely determined to claim a place in the final in Cologne. We certainly respect Essen. In order to progress to the final, we will need to perform and give everything we’ve got. In doing so, we want to make use of the home advantage."
The semi-final will take place on April 15th. The final in Cologne will be held on May 19th.
