Heading into the future with the crest

VfL Wolfsburg is switching its logo with immediate effect.

The battlements were never truly gone: in the fan stands, the W inspired by a castle always had strong visibility. Now, a modern version of the battlement crest is returning as the club’s official emblem. Starting with the Wolves’ match against FC Bayern Munich, VfL Wolfsburg will gradually transition to the new emblem. “VfL Wolfsburg looks back on more than 80 years of history. The battlement crest has been a central element from the very beginning. The battlements create a sense of identity and embody tradition,” says Sebastian Rudolph, Chairman of the VfL Supervisory Board. “We deliberately took our time with this decision and made it together. Within a collective that unites all sports and brings all people together. The battlement crest is a defining element of our club culture.”

“A historic and emotional moment”

The decision to implement the crest in a new form during the anniversary season came at the end of a months-long process involving representatives of VfL Wolfsburg-Fußball GmbH, VfL Wolfsburg e.V., the Supervisory Board, as well as the fan scene and the city, and supported by ATELIER SASSERATH x MUTABOR. “The collaboration over the past months was intensive, but above all very trusting. A new sense of togetherness has emerged between the club, fans and committees, which is now also reflected in the battlement crest,” says fan representative Marvin Minner. “We have been campaigning for the return of the battlements for over 20 years. It is the most defining element of our fan culture – today it is returning permanently across the entire club. For us, this is a historic and incredibly emotional moment.”

“A signal for the community in the region”

Alongside the gradual crest transition, the Green-and-Whites will also adapt their typography and graphic elements. Managing Director Michael Meeske emphasises: “At a time when nothing seems clear anymore, symbols are becoming increasingly important. Our emblem deliberately sends a signal for the community in the region, for shared responsibility towards one another, and enables an impressive connection between past and future. At the same time, a design system has been developed around the crest that combines defining stylistic elements from symbols, colours and typography, reflects the close relationship between plant, city and club, and allows for modern, situation-specific adaptations in its application.”

Gradual transition from logo to crest

However, the logo with which the Green-and-Whites have successfully competed for points over the past 24 years will continue to hold a prominent place with the She-Wolves and Wolves next season. Due to lead times of nearly two years in kit production, the logo will remain on the playing kit in the 2026/2027 season. Together with VfL outfitter Nike, however, a way has been created to already wear the battlement crest on a special kit in the coming season. From the 2027/28 season onwards, the battlement crest will then also appear regularly on the official playing kit. The exact release date of the special kits featuring the battlement crest is not yet known, ideally at the start of the season. In and around the arena and at VfL facilities, there will be a gradual transition from logo to crest, taking into account the lifecycle of the respective items and elements.
