VfL Wolfsburg will be determined to arrest their frustrating run of form when they kick off Matchday 10 against Werder Bremen at the Weserstadion on Friday evening (20:30 CET). The Wolves will take heart from their recent record against Werder, who have lost four of their last five Bundesliga home games against VfL. Bremen’s only win in that period was a 2-1 triumph in January 2023, when they were still a newly promoted side.
Indeed, Wolfsburg have won more top-flight away games at the Weserstadion than anywhere else. Patrick Wimmer scored twice in a 2-1 victory on their last visit to Bremen in March 2025, and the Wolves will be doing all they can to pick up a similar result on this occasion. Unfortunately, if VfL lose on Friday, they will equal an unwanted club record of six defeats and only eight points from their opening ten league games, set in the 2012/13 season.
More facts and figures
VfL enjoy playing away: Six of VfL’s seven league wins in 2025 have been on their travels.
Closing in on century: The Wolves have scored 97 Bundesliga goals against Werder – more than against any other side. However, they have also conceded 96 times in their top-flight meetings with Bremen.
Stuttering start: VfL have picked up only eight points from their nine games so far, making this their joint second-worst start to a Bundesliga campaign (they had an identical tally after ten games in 2012/13 and 1998/99). Only once before have they had fewer points at this stage of a season, having collected only six from their opening nine games in 2016/17. Only FC St. Pauli (zero) have picked up fewer points than the Wolves (three) from their last six top-flight outings.
Werder’s mini-run: Bremen are unbeaten in their last four top-flight outings, and victory on Friday would lift them up to seventh place in the table ahead of the remaining Matchday 10 fixtures. For the first time this season, they would also have more wins on the board than defeats.
At the double: Mohammed Amoura scored twice in a Bundesliga match for the first time since January in last weekend’s clash with Hoffenheim. The Algerian has scored more league goals this season (four) than any other VfL player, and will now be looking to find the net in back-to-back league games for only the second time since his arrival, having last done so in December 2024.
