Friendly abandoned with VfL 4-0 down

A medical emergency in the stands meant the Wolves’ friendly against Feyenoord was called off after 79 minutes.

Football was of secondary importance on Saturday as VfL Wolfsburg’s friendly away to Feyenoord was called off after 79 minutes due to a medical emergency in the crowd. VfL would like to wish the fan, who is now conscious and currently in hospital, a speedy recovery.

The Green-and-Whites were 4-0 down at that stage of their sixth pre-season warm-up game, which began with the teams cancelling each other out initially. However, the Dutch side, playing their last friendly ahead of making a competitive start to the 2025/26 campaign, soon seized the initiative and scored four times through Ayase Ueda (27’, 49’), Luciano Valente (65’) and Gaoussou Diarra (75’) before the officials decided to abandon the match.

VfL’s next friendly is also against tough opposition, with two games lined up against Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday 9 August. The first match will take place behind closed doors at 11:30 local time at Brighton’s training complex; the second will be at 17:00 local time at the Premier League side’s American Express Stadium.

Goals

  • 1-0 Ueda (27’): The home side take advantage of the Wolves losing possession, with summer arrival Sem Stejn threading a fine pass into the VfL box. Japanese forward Ueda sprints into the channel to collect it and smashes an unstoppable effort past Kamil Grabara.

  • 2-0 Ueda (49’): Ueda strikes again as Feyenoord make it 2-0 early in the second half. The VfL defence is undone by a long ball forward and Ueda executes another fine finish into the net.

  • 3-0 Valente (65’): Frustrating! It’s almost a carbon copy of the previous goal as a low ball forward finds substitute Valente, who scores from a tight angle into the far corner.

  • 4-0 Diarra (75’): Feyenoord have the wind in the sails as they get forward at will. After some neat link-up play a cross from the left is blocked, but Diarra is in the right place to make it 4-0 from close range.

Paul Simonis: “The most important thing today is that the fan survived. There are more important things in life than football. I wish him all the best and a speedy recovery. As for the match, Feyenoord were really good today. We competed quite well in the first half. They had a bit more possession, but we still managed to create three good chances. Our performance was OK up to that point. You could tell that Feyenoord are at the end of their six-week preparations. Still, the second half was unacceptable from us. We need to be self-critical and improve as quickly as possible. That’s not how we want to represent this club.”
