First Team

Final say: Köln

We crunch the numbers following the dramatic draw at the Volkswagen Arena.

VfL Wolfsburg’s Matchday 3 encounter with 1. FC Köln will live long in the memory. Head coach Paul Simonis’ charges created several goalscoring chances, showed their fighting spirit and overcame setbacks in a gripping 3-3 draw. The Wolves also demonstrated their character in a turbulent period of stoppage time, taking a 3-2 lead before conceding the equaliser in the last minute of the game. As such, and despite dominating for large spells, the Green-and Whites were unable to pick up the desired three points and are now winless in their last ten Bundesliga outings at the Volkswagen Arena.

Further facts and figures

Historic goal: Jakub Kaminski, on loan at Köln from VfL, salvaged a point for the Billy Goats in the 14th minute of stoppage time, making it the latest goal ever scored in the Bundesliga.

Arnold special: Maximilian Arnold scored his 11th goal from a direct free-kick in Germany’s top flight. Hakan Calhanoglu is the only other player who can match that feat (likewise with 11) in the period since Arnold made his league debut in November 2011. The VfL captain has now registered a Bundesliga all-time high of 22 long-range goals.

First for Amoura: Mohammed Amoura netted his second goal of the season, and fifth following a set piece in the Bundesliga. His goal at the weekend, which took his overall tally to 12 in Germany’s top flight, was his first to result from a free-kick.

Trio make debuts: Jenson Seelt, Adam Daghim and Jesper Lindström all made their first Bundesliga appearances for the Wolves in the match against Köln.

Fan vote: Captain Arnold took 62 percent of the ballot to be voted as Man of the Match. Amoura (18 percent) and Joakim Maehle (15 percent) took the other podium places.
