First Team

Final say: Gladbach

Facts and figures after the match at home to the Foals.

What an evening! At the outset, the Green-and-Whites would have been more than happy with a workmanlike performance and three points. Gladbach caused the home team plenty of problems in the first half and it took a couple of excellent saves from Kamil Grabara to keep them off the scoresheet.

The Wolves then looked a totally different side after the break, and ended up rounding off the first half of the season with the kind of win that grabs the headlines. It is almost a shame that the next match will already be upon us as soon as Saturday, with fans and players alike barely having 48 hours to enjoy two wins and six points picked up in the space of just four days. On the other hand, the side will be brimming with confidence as they travel to face FC Bayern this weekend.

Match facts:

  • The Green-and-Whites had gone ten matches without a win against Gladbach, but they put an end to that streak with their second-biggest win over the Foals, just behind the legendary 7-1 success recorded back in November 1998.

  • VfL ended the first half of the season on 27 points – ten more than in the second half of the previous campaign, no less.

  • The Wolves also scored more goals than ever before in the first half of a Bundesliga season, finding the back of the net 38 times.

  • Jonas Wind’s penalty was the 12th goal scored from a set piece so far this season, which is the most in the Bundesliga.

  • That opening goal last night was also the 200th Bundesliga goal for Ralph Hasenhüttl as a head coach.

  • Lukas Nmecha scored twice in a Bundesliga match for the third time – all of them coming at the Volkswagen Arena.

  • Joakim Maehle is now up to three goals this campaign – already more than he managed last season.

  • This is the first time under Gerardo Seoane that Gladbach have conceded five goals in one match in the Bundesliga.
