VfL Women have recruited a defender from the English Women’s Super League (WSL) with international experience, picking up Guro Bergsvand on a free transfer from Brighton & Hove Albion. The Norwegian international has signed a contract that will see her play in green and white until at least 30 June 2027. The 31-year-old central defender captained Brighton during the previous campaign.
“Joining VfL is an incredible opportunity”
“Wolfsburg is an important club that has made a big name for itself in women’s football over a number of years,” said Bergsvand. “As such, this is a real honour for me, and I absolutely can’t wait to get out there on the pitch soon and play my part in the team maintaining its levels of success, both in Germany and in the Champions League.”
“Wealth of international experience”
“We are incredibly pleased that we will soon be having a player with Guro’s wealth of international experience in our squad,” said Ralf Kellermann, director of women’s football at VfL Wolfsburg. “She will strengthen our team, not just with her qualities as a defender but also with her leadership experience.”
Key player for Brighton
Born in Oslo, Bergsvand has proved her worth over recent years in various different countries as well as at international level. In 2014, she made her debut in Norway’s top flight for Stabaek Fotball before going on to have spells with California Golden Bears, Lyn Fotball and then back at Stabaek. In 2020, Bergsvand joined IL Sandviken, with whom she won the Norwegian league in 2021. After the club merged with SK Brann that summer, Bergsvand helped them win the league and cup double in 2022. In early 2023, the now 31-year-old moved to the English Women’s Super League and made 71 appearances for Brighton, ending her time at the club as captain.
The central defender made her senior debut for Norway on 16 September 2021 in a World Cup qualifier against Armenia, marking the occasion by scoring a goal. She has gone on to play 41 times for her country, including at EURO 2022 and the 2023 World Cup.
