Dieter Hecking has taken over the position of head coach at VfL Wolfsburg, succeeding Daniel Bauer. The 61-year-old returns to the Wolves’ touchline almost ten years after his departure.
Experience for the final stretch
“Dieter Hecking brings exactly the experience we need in the current situation. He knows the club, the environment and the demands of the Bundesliga extremely well. We are convinced that with his calmness, his expertise and his clear approach, he will give the team the stability it needs to achieve our shared goal of securing Bundesliga survival,” says VfL sporting director Pirmin Schwegler.
Runners-up finish, DFB Cup and Supercup
Between 2013 and 2016, Hecking shaped one of the most successful periods in VfL’s recent history. In the 2014/2015 season, he led the Wolves to a runners-up finish in the Bundesliga, to the DFB Cup title against Borussia Dortmund and shortly afterwards to victory in the Supercup against Bayern Munich. In total, he stood on the Wolves’ touchline for 165 competitive matches, making him the coach with the second-most games in the club’s history. During that time, he averaged 1.75 points per match.
“Pooling all our strength together”
Dieter Hecking: “Returning to VfL Wolfsburg means a lot to me. I experienced an intense and successful period here and know the quality and energy within this club. Now it’s about focusing fully on the tasks ahead and pooling all our strength together to remain in the Bundesliga.”
Most recent spell in Bochum
After his time with the Green-and-Whites, Hecking worked as head coach at Borussia Mönchengladbach and Hamburger SV. He then took on responsibility as sporting director at 1. FC Nürnberg and also returned to the touchline there for a period as head coach. Most recently, he served as head coach of VfL Bochum from November 2024 to September 2025.
