Defending Pole Position

What you need to know ahead of Saturday’s showdown for 16th place at the Millerntor.

The Wolves have unintentionally made Bundesliga history on more than one occasion. This, however, is one chapter those in green and white could have done without: Never before have the bottom three teams been level on points going into the final matchday. At least Dieter Hecking’s side head into Saturday’s direct clash away to FC St. Pauli on 16 May (kick-off 3.30pm CEST) in the best position of the three contenders for 16th place – with their fate still in their own hands. The key facts and figures ahead of the away game against the Kiezkicker:

  • FC St. Pauli are the only team in the league not to have picked up a point from their last three matches. Overall, the Hanseaten are now without a win in nine games.

  • Wolfsburg and St. Pauli are among the Bundesliga’s top five teams in terms of distance covered. There are clear differences when it comes to pace, though – while the Hamburg side have recorded the fewest sprints in the league (an average of just 147 per game), the Wolves rank fourth with 169 sprints per match.

  • Wolfsburg find themselves near the bottom primarily because of their poor home record: their 10 points at home are the fewest in the league. Away from home, the Wolves have been far more competitive, collecting 16 of their 26 points on the road. Their last two away games at Union (2-1) and Freiburg (1-1) yielded four points.

  • Even in their second season after promotion, the Kiezkicker are suffering from a lack of goals. Their total of 28 goals after 33 matches is the lowest in the league – and exactly the same as they managed after 34 games last season.

  • The dramatic late 2-1 win in this season’s reverse fixture is no omen: in 29 years of meetings, Wolfsburg have never won both league encounters against St. Pauli in the same campaign.

  • St. Pauli are bottom of the table for the first time since returning to the Bundesliga. The last time they occupied 18th place was after Matchday 34 of the 2010/2011 season.

  • The two teams have met in a season finale before: in the second meeting of the 1993/1994 campaign, then on Matchday 38, Wolfsburg won 4-1 at the Elsterweg and denied the Hamburg side promotion to the Bundesliga.
