Defeat in the Supercup

Goals from Endemann und Minge were not enough in a 4-2 loss against Bayern Munich.

VfL Wolfsburg Women were unable to exact revenge for their Google Pixel Supercup defeat against Bayern Munich last year as they slipped to a 4-2 defeat against the same opponents in the competition on Saturday.

Magdalena Eriksson (18’) and Jovana Damnjanovic (25’) put the defending German champions ahead, but Vivien Endemann (58’) reduced the deficit in the second half. However, Bayern hit back through a sublime goal from Lea Schüller (72’) and a Georgia Stanway penalty (78’) to take command of the tie. The Green-and-Whites showed great character in a bid to fight back, but a late penalty from Janina Minge (88’) was ultimately not enough.

The She-Wolves kick-off their Google Pixel Women’s Bundesliga campaign  on Sunday 7 September away to Hamburger SV at the Volksparkstadion (kick-off 16:00 CEST).

Goals:

  • 1-0 Magdalena Eriksson (18’): The centre-back lingers up front following a set piece and is given too much space on the edge of the area, allowing her to smash a powerful left-footed drive into the net.

  • 2-0 Jovana Damnjanovic (25’): Damnjanovic skips past her marker and squeezes the ball in at the near post with her left foot. No chance for the VfL goalkeeper.

  • 2-1 Vivien Endemann (58’): As Bayern struggle to clear a corner, Endemann reacts quickest and scores with her left foot.

  • 3-1 Lea Schüller (72’): Schüller takes the ball down on her chest and shoots on the turn, arrowing an eye-catching effort into the corner.

  • 4-1 Georgia Stanway (pen. 78’): After Justine Kielland fouls Damnjanovic, Stanway steps up and coverts from the spot with a thundering strike into the bottom-right corner.

  • 4-2 Janina Minge (pen. 88’): Lineth Beerensteyn is brought down by Lena Oberdorf inside the box. Minge holds her nerve and buries a powerful shot into the right-hand corner.

Reaction

Stephan Lerch: “The match ebbed and flowed. Congratulations to Bayern, who deserved to win the game. They played with a great deal of confidence and we didn't offer enough resistance in the first half. Even in our pressing, we didn’t go into challenges the way we had planned. On top of that, Bayern simply had the quality to make us chase the game at times.

“We weren’t as brave in possession as we wanted to be. With the two goals we conceded, it was hard to cope with their dominance. We did better in the second half and managed to put Bayern under more pressure. The goal we scored gave us energy, but unfortunately, the situation with the red card and penalty made it difficult to turn the game around. Still, the team never gave up and that’s something to build on for the future.”
