Daniel Bauer will remain in charge of the VfL Wolfsburg first team. The 43-year-old, who took over in a caretaker capacity on 9 November following the dismissal of Paul Simonis, has agreed a contract through to 30 June 2027. Bauer and his coaching staff have stabilised the Wolves in recent weeks, and picked up seven points from the last four games.

“Daniel took charge of the team in a difficult period again, and he not only managed to bring stability, he’s developed the side week by week,” said VfL managing director for sport Peter Christiansen. “He’s created a strong unit and breathed new life into the team. For us, it was important to first restructure the sporting leadership and then make a carefully considered decision together regarding the position of head coach.”
VfL sporting director Pirmin Schwegler added: “The performances on the pitch – and the results – speak for themselves. We are confident that Daniel is the right man to deliver the best possible results on the pitch this season and beyond. We are looking forward to continuing our journey together.”

The Andernach native has been at the club since 2016, having joined the VfL academy from Hannover 96. He has held a variety of positions over the last nine years: as assistant coach of the U19s and the former U23 side, as well as head coach of the U17s and, most recently, the U19s. He took charge of the first team in an interim capacity near the end of last season, earning four points from the final two matches of the campaign.
Course for Pro Licence coaching badge to start in January
As planned, Bauer will begin the DFB course to obtain his Pro Licence coaching badge in January 2026, alongside his role as head coach of the first team.
