“Creating Optimal Conditions for the Future”

In interview: Jan Naumann on the ongoing work at the AOK Stadion.

Extensive modernisation work is currently being carried out at the AOK Stadion. With a view to the upcoming season, not only is the playing surface being renewed, but the infrastructure beneath the pitch is also being further developed. However, a project of this kind involves far more than simply laying a new pitch. In this interview, Jan Naumann, Head of Groundskeeping at VfL Wolfsburg, discusses the current work, the challenges of a project on this scale and the importance of modern stadium infrastructure.

Jan Naumann, anyone looking into the AOK Stadion at the moment can immediately see that work is underway. What measures are currently being implemented?

Jan Naumann: The pitch is currently undergoing a comprehensive modernisation. In addition to the complete renewal of the turf, it is being converted to a hybrid pitch system. Work is also being carried out on the substructure. This includes the installation of foam glass aggregate to improve the facility’s energy efficiency and reduce energy costs over the long term.

Why was the pitch renewal scheduled for this particular time?

Jan: The summer break provides the ideal window for measures of this scale. This allows the work to be carried out without disrupting football operations, and the stadium will be ready in optimal condition in time for the start of the season.

How long does the preparation for a project of this scale normally take?

Jan: Projects like this are planned many months in advance. From the initial needs analysis and coordination with specialist planners and contractors through to detailed scheduling, numerous steps are required to ensure the project runs smoothly.

Which departments and teams are involved in the work?

Jan: Various specialist departments are working closely together on the project. These include Facility Management, Groundskeeping, STRABAG, external sports turf construction companies and other technical service providers. Close coordination between all parties involved is essential.

What are the biggest challenges in a project like this?

Jan: The greatest challenge is implementing all measures within a tight timeframe while maintaining the highest quality standards. In addition, factors such as weather conditions, material availability and the coordination of different trades all play a role.

How important is a modern and functional infrastructure for football operations?

Jan: Modern infrastructure is the foundation for optimal training and playing conditions. It contributes to the performance of the teams, increases safety for the players and at the same time ensures efficient and sustainable stadium operations.

The current work is probably about more than just the pitch itself. What other factors play an important role?

Jan: In addition to the playing surface, the substructure, drainage, irrigation technology and energy-related aspects are particularly important. The work below ground is crucial to ensuring that the pitch can be used sustainably, efficiently and under heavy demands over the long term.

What requirements must the stadium and playing surface meet in order to create optimal conditions for the team?

Jan: The playing surface must provide a high level of quality, durability and consistency throughout the year. At the same time, the infrastructure, technology and maintenance concepts must be coordinated in such a way that optimal conditions for training and competition can be ensured at all times.

Is the work currently progressing according to plan?

Jan: Yes, the work is currently on schedule. All the companies involved are working closely together, so at present we expect to complete the measures on time by the end of August and have optimal conditions in place.
