VfL Wolfsburg took maximum points for second successive week as Daniel Bauer’s charges earned a 3-1 victory at Borussia Mönchengladbach on Saturday afternoon in their last away game of the year. Patrick Wimmer scored the opener (4’), only for it to be cancelled out by a Konstantinos Koulierakis own goal (22’), but VfL pulled clear again before the interval.
Amoura and Wimmer on target
The 47,161 spectators at Borussia-Park witnessed a strong away performance from the Green-and-Whites, who gave themselves a two-goal cushion at the break thanks to efforts from Mohammed Amoura (30’) and another from Wimmer (34’). The Wolves’ third away win of the season means they climb to 13th in the table.
Freiburg up next
VfL are next in action on Saturday 20 December when they host SC Freiburg at the Volkswagen Arena in their final fixture of 2025 (kick-off 15:30 CET).
Goals
- 0-1 Wimmer (4’): The Wolves’ first attack produces their first goal. Lovro Majer gains possession on the right and floats a wonderful cross into the box for Wimmer. He controls the ball and loses his marker before smashing a right-footed shot into the net on the turn. A brilliant finish!
- 1-1 Koulierakis (o.g. 22’): VfL get the second goal of the game – but at the wrong end of the pitch. Koulierakis and Haris Tabakovic tussle in the air to win a cross into the box, but the Greek defender inadvertently glances it into his own net under pressure from the Gladbach forward. There is a VAR review for a foul but the goal is given.
- 1-2 Amoura (30’): Some wonderful link-up play between VfL’s attackers culminates in Christian Eriksen whipping a cross in from the right for Wimmer, who can’t quite connect with it. However, the ball falls into the path of the onrushing Amoura, who lashes it into the net from a central position to restore the Wolves’ lead.
- 1-3 Wimmer (34’): A quickfire double! The same three players are involved again as Amoura sends Eriksen into the box. He plays a no-look pass into the path of Wimmer, who sweeps the ball into the far corner on the turn. Another lovely goal!
Reaction
Daniel Bauer: “I’ll have to be careful not to praise the team too much, even though they deserve it. That was a very, very good game from us. In the first half in particular we were very close to our best. When you consider where we are in the table and the situation we’re in, we couldn’t really have played any better than we did in Gladbach. The second half ebbed and flowed bit. Gladbach obviously threw everything forward and we had to withstand a couple of tricky moments. But overall, we deserved to come away with the win.”
Eugen Polanski: “We’re obviously disappointed, first of all with the defeat but also with the way we played in the first half. We didn’t get into the tackles at all. The opening goal was a real blow. I hoped that the team would wake up when we equalised out of the blue, but instead we gave away the second and third goals, even if Wolfsburg finished them off well. We tried to turn things around in the second half but Wolfsburg managed the game cleverly. We just have to take this one on the chin.”
