Comfortable win in Nuremberg

The She-Wolves earned a 6-1 victory at 1. FC Nürnberg.

Following the midweek defeat in Madrid, VfL Wolfsburg Women showed the perfect reaction with a superb 6-1 win at 1. FC Nürnberg to round out the first half of the season.

Alexandra Popp set the course for victory with the opening goal in the 26th minute, and Vivien Endemann gave VfL a deserved 2-0 half-time lead with a second just before the interval (45’+4).

The Green-and-Whites continued in the second half as they had finished the first – with goals. Lena Lattwein made it 3-0 shortly before the hour mark (58’) and Justine Kielland added another just two minutes later.

Kleinherne debut

The hosts pulled one back with an eye-catching strike to reduce the deficit to 4-1, but the She-Wolves swiftly quashed any hopes of a comeback by grabbing their fifth of the game through Kielland (69’). Substitute Kessya Bussy added further gloss to the scoreline in the closing stages (84’) to round off a deserved 6-1 success. To cap it all off, Sophia Kleinherne made her VfL debut after a lengthy spell on the sidelines with injury.

Goals

  • 0-1 Popp (26’): Finally! Janou Levels drills a cross from the left into the box and finds Popp, who heads into the right-hand corner from seven metres out.

  • 0-2 Endemann (45’+4): VfL get a vital second! After Nürnberg commit numbers forward for the first time, Cora Zicai plays a long ball forward from inside her own half towards Endemann, who is all of a sudden through on goal. She takes it around the home goalkeeper and slots in to make it 2-0.

  • 0-3 Lattwein (58’): Levels curls a cross from the left into the box, where Lattwein volleys into the right-hand corner.

  • 0-4 Kielland (60’): What a goal! From a short corner, Kielland curls the ball from the left-hand corner of the penalty area inside the far post to put the She-Wolves 4-0 up!

  • 1-4 Mai (63’): VfL struggle to clear a ball into the box, culminating in Franziska Mai firing an unstoppable shot into the net from the edge of the area.

  • 1-5 Kielland (69’): Lattwein lays the ball off inside the Nürnberg box to Kielland, who smashes in her second goal of the game.

  • 1-6 Bussy (84’): Lattwein plays a brilliant pass through to Bussy, who slots in on the rebound after her first attempt is blocked.

Reaction

Stephan Lerch: “We showed a good reaction to the game in Madrid and created a lot of chances. We’re a bit frustrated that we conceded from a set piece because you allow the opposition back into the game a bit like that. On the whole, though, we’re happy and pleased that we bounced back in this way and got this result. Everyone did their jobs brilliantly out on the pitch.”
