Comeback win at home

The She-Wolves picked up another 3-1 victory over SC Freiburg on Friday.

Having recently defeated SC Freiburg 3-1 in the DFB Cup last 16, VfL Wolfsburg Women beat the same team by the same scoreline at the AOK Stadion on Matchday 12 of the Google Pixel Women’s Bundesliga.

Lella Egli put the visitors in front in the 12th minute and Freiburg held on to their lead until the break. Justine Kielland equalised for the Green-and-Whites early in the second half though (51’), with Caitlin Dijkstra completing the turnaround in the 68th minute to make it 2-1. Alex Popp made sure of the points shortly before the final whistle.

VfL now have a few days to recover before facing Real Madrid away in the UEFA Women’s Champions League on Tuesday 9 December. Kick-off at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stéfano is at 21:00 CET.

Stephan Lerch: “I’m very proud of the team for the way they dealt with going behind, for staying calm and then for turning it around in the second half to win 3-1. You have to praise the team’s character again today.”

Goals

  • 0-1 Egli (12’): After some neat link-up play, Egli receives the ball on the left-hand side of the penalty area and curls an unstoppable shot into the right corner.

  • 1-1 Kielland (51’): Kielland crosses into the box from the left. Popp leaps to meet it but doesn’t connect with the ball, and it sails straight into the right-hand corner for the equaliser.

  • 2-1 Dijkstra (68)’: Laura Benkarth can only parry Kielland’s shot, allowing Dijkstra to prod the rebound over the line.

  • 3-1 Popp (88’): Janina Minge delivers a precise long ball forward to Popp. She uses her strength well to beat her marker to the ball before running through on goal and coolly slotting in to make it 3-1.
