Clash of the record winners

U17 Wolves and Hannover 96 battle for the first NFV Cup in six years.

Following the restructuring of the Lower Saxony leagues, the B-Junior cup competition also returned at the start of the season after a six-year hiatus. In the first NFV Cup final since 2020, the U17 Wolves will face Hannover 96 on Thursday at 14:00 at the August-Wenzel-Stadion in Barsinghausen. It sets up a meeting between two long-standing rivals.

The road to the final

On their way to the final, both Wolfsburg and Hannover kept clean sheets throughout. VfL recorded an 11-0 win at VfL Sittensen in the round of 16, followed by a 4-0 victory at VfB Oldenburg, before booking their place in the final with a 1-0 win over Eintracht Braunschweig.

Hannover 96 first defeated HSC Hannover 2-0, then TSV Havelse by the same scoreline, and also won their semi-final 2-0 away at SC Hemmingen-Westerfeld. In the DFB Youth League, Hannover’s run ended in the round of 16 with a heavy 0-9 defeat against VfB Stuttgart.

“We want to bring the cup to Wolfsburg”

“We’re facing a derby against Hannover in the cup final, and we know exactly what to expect. It will be crucial that we are fully switched on from the very first second and impose our style of play,” emphasised head coach Yannic Thiel. “As a team, we have developed very well over the second half of the season and now want to cap that progress. Our goal is clear: we want to bring the cup to Wolfsburg.”

The Green-and-Whites celebrated their most recent and overall 11th title in 2019. Hannover 96 lead the all-time winners’ list with one more triumph.
