Big win after dominant display

VfL Women earned a 5-1 victory at Bayer 04 Leverkusen, who ended the game with nine players.

The She-Wolves came away from their six-pointer at Bayer 04 Leverkusen with a 5-1 success, pulling clear of their hosts in the table and consolidating second behind Bayern Munich.

Leverkusen had goalkeeper Charlotte Voll and defender Lilla Turanyi sent off in a match the Green-and-Whites dominated from start to finish. Lineth Beerensteyn (48’), Guro Bergsvand (89’) and Alexandra Popp (23’, 43’) got the goals for VfL, while home defender Claudia Wenger scored at both ends.

There is now a hiatus in league action for the international break. The She-Wolves’ next game is on Saturday 1 November when they welcome TSG 1899 Hoffenheim to the AOK Stadion on Matchday 8 (kick-off 16:00 CET).

Goals

  • 0-1 Alexandra Popp (23’): Yessss! Janina Minge is given space to shoot from just inside the penalty area. Popp redirects it with her heel into the net to put VfL 1-0 up.
  • 0-2 Alexandra Popp (43’): Popp at the double! Svenja Huth crosses from the right and Popp wins her aerial duel to deservedly extend the side’s lead.
  • 1-2 Claudia Wenger (47’): Leverkusen get a foothold in the game early in the second half. A free-kick from Estrella Merino Gonzalez finds Wenger, who heads it over the line.
  • 1-3 Lineth Beerensteyn (48’): The perfect response from VfL! Just moments after conceding, the She-Wolves score at the other end as Beerensteyn finds the net from a central position.
  • 1-4 Wenger (o.g. 72’): Wenger also gets a brace – of sorts! Huth’s cross into the box is a dangerous one and although Beerensteyn gets something on it, Wenger has the last touch and it’s given as an own goal.
  • 1-5 Guro Bergsvand (89’): Two substitutes combine to put the seal on the win. Judit Pujols delivers a corner into the box and Bergsvand meets it to head in VfL’s fifth of the day.

Reaction

Stephan Lerch: “We made the most of our numerical advantage well today. We had a lot of possession and were dominant. We also stayed patient and got the win we deserved at the end. I’m pleased with the way we handled the task at hand today.”
