It wasn’t only a very special Saturday evening for Muhammed Damar, who made his competitive debut for VfL that day. The match is also likely to live long in the memory of 15 refugee children from Wolfsburg. The children and one parent each were invited to the opening fixture against 1. FC Kaiserslautern by new Wolves signing Damar. For the midfielder, it was the most natural thing in the world: “It’s important to me to help people who haven’t had it easy in life and to be able to bring them some joy.”
A signed shirt to remember the occasion
Damar, who was on the pitch for almost 90 minutes, headed to Marathontor 4 after the match to chat with the invited children and their parents. After a group photo, the 22-year-old took the time to pose for more personal souvenir photos with the children of different ages. Damar gave each child a shirt, which he then signed for them. “I’m aware of how fortunate I am to have such a good life, but I know that not everyone does – and that’s why I want to give something back. People should never feel that doing a good deed is beneath them. It’s a wonderful thing to support one another. I hope I can make a difference by doing this.”
