Beaten by title rivals

The She-Wolves lost 3-1 at Bayern Munich on Friday.

VfL Wolfsburg Women’s top-of-the-table encounter at FC Bayern Munich on Friday ended in disappointment as they slipped to a 3-1 defeat on Matchday 17 of the Google Pixel Women’s Bundesliga. In a hard-fought contest, Pernille Harder gave the hosts a 13th-minute lead against a She-Wolves side who struggled to make inroads in the final third. The visitors were 2-0 down when Harder grabbed her second of the game less than two minutes after the restart, before Lea Schüller capitalised on the growing spaces in the VfL defence to extend Bayern’s lead (69’).

The Green-and-Whites refused to give in and Lineth Beerensteyn scored a deserved consolation with 15 minutes remaining, but the 3-1 defeat leaves Tommy Stroot’s charges six points adrift of the league leaders with only five games left to play. The VfL squad are flying back to Wolfsburg on Friday evening and will now turn their attention towards their next crunch clash – the first leg of their UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-final at home to FC Barcelona.

Goals

  • 1-0 Harder (13’): Argh! A Bayern throw falls to Alara Sehitler, who sends a looping ball into the Wolfsburg penalty area. Klara Bühl’s back-heel then finds Harder, who is left with the simple task of steering the ball into the net.

  • 2-0 Harder (47’): Harder letsJovanaDamnjanovic’s cross from the right bounce near the edge of the area before doubling Bayern’s lead with a fierce drive.

  • 3-0 Schüller (69’): Schüller, who has only just come off the bench, heads home Bayern’s third from close range after fine play by Harder in the build-up.

  • 3-1 Beerensteyn (75’): The Green-and-Whites appear to be running out of luck and ideas in front of goal, but Beerensteyn manages to skip past several Bayern challenges before sending a low shot into the corner from inside the box.

Reaction

Alex Popp: “We had high hopes but are left feeling extremely disappointed. The defeat is obviously a really painful one and hasn’t improved our title chances. Bayern were really clinical in attack and we weren’t. The goals we conceded were also too soft, which we can’t afford to let happen in such an important game.”
