Another clean sheet against Mainz?

The fact file ahead of the Wolves’ clash with 1. FSV Mainz 05 on Sunday.

Two in-form teams with identical recent records go head to head when 1. FSV Mainz 05 visit the Volkswagen Arena at 15:30 CET on Sunday. Both Mainz and VfL Wolfsburg are unbeaten in their last five league fixtures, having followed up back-to-back draws with three straight victories. While the Zerofivers are unbeaten in a club-record nine Bundesliga away games stretching back to last season (W4 D5), the Wolves have kept more clean sheets against FSV (15) than against any other side in the top flight. Indeed, the Green-and-Whites have triumphed in seven of the past 11 encounters between the teams, keeping a clean sheet on each occasion. VfL’s defence, who have shipped just three goals in their past seven games across all competitions, could play a key role in the teams’ latest meeting.

More facts and figures

  • Strong Wind: After coming off the bench in the recent 3-0 DFB Cup win over Hoffenheim, Jonas Wind once again showed his attacking qualities with a goal and two assists. The Danish striker particularly enjoys facing Mainz, having struck twice in two of his three home appearances against Sunday’s opponents. Wind has not yet scored more than four goals against a Bundesliga outfit.
  • A fantastic start: Summer signing Mohammed Amoura has registered nine goal involvements (four goals, five assists) in ten Bundesliga appearances this season, more than any of his team-mates.
  • Beware of Burkardt: Mainz have an in-form attacker of their own in Jonathan Burkardt, who has scored more Bundesliga goals in 2024 (17) than any other German player. He was on target in Mainz’s 3-1 victory at the Volkswagen Arena on Matchday 34 last season, which was their only away win of the entire campaign and secured the team’s top-flight safety.
  • Much-improved Mainz: Of the 16 clubs who were in the Bundesliga last season, Mainz have made the biggest leap up the table this term, climbing from 13th at the end of 2023/24 to seventh ahead of this weekend’s fixtures.
