On Sunday evening, the AOK Stadion erupted and rocked in celebration - with a 2-0 win over SGS Essen, the VfL ladies claimed their first title of the current season and the fourth German championship victory overall (following previous successes in 2013, 2014 and 2017). Before participating in the DFB-Cup and UEFA Women’s Champions League finals in the coming weeks, in the hope of securing two further titles this season, the Lady-Wolves took the time to celebrate their league win at the AOK Stadion.
"The team are not yet satisfied"
VfL general manager Dr. Tim Schumacher: "We are very proud of this success. That was a great performance – the team were particularly convincing in the second-half. It’s a fantastic achievement to claim the championship title this early. We are delighted that the first crown is there, but the focus now switches to the DFB-Cup and Champions League finals."
Almuth Schult: "It is a really good feeling to be German champions. We are very happy to have done it before the up-coming finals. We are deservedly German champions."
Lena Goeßling: "It’s really wonderful to be German champions and we can enjoy that today. But then we must focus on the up-coming finals. Of course it helps us that the weight of the league is no longer on our shoulders. We have a great team, with super moral, commitment on the pitch and the unbridled will to win every game. It’s clear to see that this team is not quite satisfied with its lot just yet."
Ella Masar: "I am of course delighted about my two goals, but the whole team really deserves some major praise. At half-time the coach told me to stay in the penalty area and not drift out onto the wings – the balls would find me! I am honoured to have such fate placed in me – and the fact that it worked out is a really great feeling. It is the first championship win in my career and now I am really looking forward to next week’s final in Cologne."
