Amoura with Algeria at AFCON

Mohammed Amoura is going for glory in Morocco.

While the majority of the Wolves squad are enjoying the Christmas break following the final match of the year against SC Freiburg, Mohammed Amoura will be spending the holidays in action for the Algerian national team. The striker travelled straight to the Africa Cup of Nations following the recent away game at Borussia Mönchengladbach.

“Wish him every success”

Should the 25-year-old make it all the way to the final with Algeria, he would miss VfL’s trip to Bayern Munich on 11 January as well as the two home matches against St. Pauli (14 January) and Heidenheim (17 January). Despite that, VfL head coach Daniel Bauer is pleased about Amoura’s call-up: “I wholeheartedly wish him every success: winning the title, being top goalscorer and coming back fit. AFCON is a big deal, which we’ve also noticed in him in the last few weeks. It was nice that he delivered another strong performance at Gladbach and went off to the national team with so much confidence.”

Algeria’s man for goals

Amoura already made headlines during the second international window of the season in October, as he fired Algeria to the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico with a brace in the 3-0 win in Somalia. Three more goals followed in the next two internationals against Uganda and Zimbabwe. In total the VfL forward has registered 19 goals in 38 appearances for the Fennecs. Algeria have won the Africa Cup of Nations twice in their history – in 1990 and more recently in 2019. The current holders are Ivory Coast, while the record winners are Egypt with seven titles.
