There are new leaders in Group A of the preliminary round of the DFB Youth League! The U17 Young Wolves cruised to a 9-0 (4-0) victory over Eimsbütteler TV on Saturday to take top spot. Three Wolfsburg players each bagged a brace.
Goals galore before and after the break
For the first time this season, head coach Christian Stegmaier’s side took to the pitch at the AOK Stadion. Against an Eimsbüttel team still without a point and bottom of the table, Elia Zimmermann opened the scoring in the 20th minute. Yvan Simo Kom, with his sixth and seventh goals of the season, and Pepe Ullrich from the penalty spot then gave the Wolves a 4-0 lead at the break.
The Young Wolves remained on top after the restart, but again had to wait 20 minutes for the first goal of the half: Lenn Grupe made it 5-0 in the 65th minute. The scoreline became emphatic in the closing stages. Arne Filbry (73’, 77’) and Younes Mhana (88’, 90+2’), who recently signed a long-term contract extension with the Green-and-Whites, each struck twice to complete the 9-0 rout. It was the Wolfsburg U17s’ biggest league win since a 12-0 victory over Niendorfer TSV in March 2017.
“More clinical in front of goal”
Christian Stegmaier: We went into the game with a bit of anger in our bellies because of the way the match in Rostock played out. Our movement was similarly good, but we were much more clinical in front of goal and were able to put the game to bed before half-time. We’re particularly pleased that all five goals in the second half were scored by substitutes. It shows that we can keep adding quality from the bench and bring fresh impetus. Credit to Eimsbüttel as well, who stayed true to their style and kept trying to find solutions through their football. We’re looking forward to our remaining home games because the conditions at the AOK Stadion really are excellent.
