SC Freiburg defied the odds on Bundesliga Matchday 4 to beat VfL Wolfsburg 3-1 at the Volkswagen Arena, handing the Wolves their first defeat of the season. After the final whistle both VfL head coach Bruno Labbadia and his Freiburg counterpart Christian Streich praised the opposition.
Bruno Labbadia: „The match played right into Freiburg's hands. They played and defended passionately. We weren't at our best today but we have to recognise that Freiburg were very good right from the start. Once they had the lead they kept things very tight at the back. We had some good moves in the first half but we just lacked urgency with the final ball. We kept going close, but never close enough to score. We believed we could turn the match around if we got a goal back, but when they scored their third it killed the game off. Nevertheless, my team kept trying to come back right until the final whistle. It's important we keep doing that. We were a little bit off our game today – and that makes a big difference in the Bundesliga.“
Christian Streich: „We're very happy to have held our own in Wolfsburg – and not just by picking up a point, but by winning. The match went really well for us. It was a great performance, from our substitutes too. We did well when we changed our tactics after they pulled one back to make it 3-1. Overall it was a very passionate performance and I'm delighted we won. Wolfsburg are a completely different team to last season. They're very flexible and can play long passes, short passes and diagonal passes. We defended very well and obviously had a bit of luck that our goalkeeper made some good saves when we were 2-0 up.“
