Wolves secure Europa League berth

VfL Wolfsburg confirmed their place in next season’s UEFA Europa League group stage with an emphatic 8-1 victory over FC Augsburg, their biggest ever in the Bundesliga.

A hat-trick from Wout Weghorst and further goals from captain Robin Knoche, Daniel Ginczek, Elvis Rexhbecaj, substitute Josip Brekalo and an own-goal from Kevin Danso ensured the Wolves finished sixth on 55 points to secure an automatic Europa League berth.

Labbadia finishes on a high

Outgoing coach Bruno Labbadia was given the best possible send-off with Oliver Glasner set to take over next term and the 53-year-old made three changes to his final Wolfsburg line-up. Jerome Roussillon came back into the side following a five-week injury absence, while Ginczek made only his second start of the calendar year and Rexhbecaj also played from the off.

Weghorst sets the tone

The Wolves started promisingly and were rewarded with 21 minutes on the clock, Weghorst finishing opportunistically on the turn from William’s cross. Little over a quarter of an hour later and it was repeat business for the Dutchman, who cushioned home superbly from Admir Mehmedi’s cross.

It was no less than the home side deserved for their dominance and there was more to come before the half was out. Captain for the day Knoche was the next on the scoresheet, nodding in from Maximilian Arnold’s corner to give the Wolves a comfortable advantage at the break.

Spectacular second half

The Wolves were not done there, though. Within ten minutes of the restart Weghorst had completed his hat-trick, smashing into the roof of the net for his 17th of the season. Then the goals just didn’t stop coming. Two minutes on and Ginczek swept in after Yannick Gerhardt’s effort rebounded off the post, before Rexhbecaj made it three goals in five minutes with a tidy first-time finish.

If there were any thoughts of Julian Schieber’s consolation for Augsburg on 82 minutes blotting the copybook, they were quickly quashed as the Wolves bagged two more late on to rack up their greatest ever margin of victory in the Bundesliga. Substitute Brekalo got in on the act with number seven and Danso’s own goal one minute from time rounded off a fine campaign.
