VfL Wolfsburg suffered a 4-1 defeat at RB Leipzig on Matchday 33, Daniel Didavi's goal (47') after the interval rendered meaningless by a brace from Ademola Lookman (24', 52') as well as strikes from Timo Werner (33') and Jean-Kevin Augustin (63'). The defeat leaves the Wolves sitting 16th ahead of the final game of the season next Saturday (kick-off: 15:30 CEST), when relegated 1. FC Köln visit the Volkswagen-Arena.

Three Wolfsburg changes

Wolfsburg coach Bruno Labbadia opted for a three-man defence, fielding Felix Uduokhai alongside Robin Knoche and Jeffrey Bruma. The latter was one of three changes from last weekend's 3-1 defeat to Hamburger SV, with Didavi and Josip Brekalo also starting; Paul Verhaegh (suspended), Marcel Tisserand (thigh) and Jakub Blaszczykowski (bench) missed out.

Solid start from the Wolves

The visitors made an enterprising start, with Divock Origi firing off the first shot of the game in the second minute. His effort hit the side-netting, before Brekalo was next to come close, shooting powerfully – but straight at Peter Gulacsi in the Leipzig goal – after lovely combination play with William seven minutes later.

Leipzig catch Wolfsburg cold

Despite a confident opening from the Wolves, Leipzig took the lead with their first real chance in the 24th minute, Lookman finishing well from close range following Augustin's cross. The opener proved the turning point: where Wolfsburg went into their shells, Leipzig came out of theirs, and after Augustin's strike was disallowed for offside, Werner doubled the lead with a crisp finish in the 33rd minute.

Didavi responds

Labbadia reacted to the deficit by introducing Nany Landry Dimata for Knoche at the break, and within two minutes the change paid dividends: Dimata proved a nuisance in the box, allowing Renato Steffen on the left to pick out Didavi, who finished expertly past Gulacsi. VfL were to prove architects of their own downfall, however. Within five minutes of Didavi's goal, confusion in the visiting defence allowed Werner to race through and square for Lookman, who made no mistake with the finish. When Augustin made it 4-1 in the 63rd minute, the game was up, despite Origi's valiant efforts up top late on.
