Wolf tracks on Monday

Wout Weghorst overtakes Maximilian Arnold and is named as Player of the Week by kicker magazine.

In this latest edition of Wolf tracks we shine the spotlight on Weghorst, Arnold and the Wolves‘ winter Media Day.

Praise where it’s due: Weghorst’s hat-trick not only ensured the Green-and-Whites took all three points from their meeting with TSG Hoffenheim, it also had an additional positive outcome for the Dutchman. The forward was awarded the highest grade of one (the equivalent of an ‘A’ in Germany) by kicker and was named as the magazine’s Player of the Week, while he was also included in the Sportschau Team of the Week and was voted Man of the Match on the VfL website.

Arnold leapfrogged: Weghorst’s treble also bumped him up a place in VfL’s all-time Bundesliga top scorer’s chart, with his new tally of 27 lifting him one above team-mate Arnold and into ninth. He could still climb even higher this season, as Martin Petrov and Ivica Olic (both on 28) and Tomislav Maric (31) are all within touching distance.

One-match ban: Arnold received his fifth booking of the season against Hoffenheim and is therefore suspended for the Wolves’ upcoming match at home to 1. FSV Mainz 05 on Sunday 23 February (kick-off 18:00 CET).

A visit from the DFL: After Monday morning’s training session, a number of the VfL squad headed to the Volkswagen Arena for a follow-up photo shoot with the German Football League (DFL). New winter signing Marin Pongracic was the primary subject of the session, although Weghorst, Admir Mehmedi, Joao Victor, John Anthony Brooks and youngsters Iba May, Ulysses Llanez and Mamoudou Karamoko were also involved.
