VfL Wolfsburg started as they mean to go on in 2021/22, earning a 2-1 victory over second-division side FC Erzgebirge Aue at the AOK Stadion on Tuesday afternoon. Five days after beginning their pre-season training, the Green-and-Whites took to the field in front of 390 spectators in new head coach Mark van Bommels' first game in charge.
Seventeen-year-old duo Matthew Meier (56') and Sean Busch (77') were both on the scoresheet for VfL. The team's next game as they gear up for a return to the UEFA Champions League this term is on Saturday 10 July against newly promoted second-tier side Hansa Rostock at the AOK Stadion.
"A good first friendly"
Mark van Bommel: "After four or five days of training you can't expect everything to work well and be implemented perfectly. We had a lot of young players with us and they gave it everything they had. The level dropped a bit towards the end, but that's normal. We had a couple of nice attacks and you could definitely see a couple of the things we've been working on in training. Considering it was our first friendly, it was good."
