VfL Wolfsburg earned a well-deserved 3-0 victory over SC Freiburg on Sunday night – their third win and third clean sheet in a row. The three points take them up to third in the table, putting the Green-and-Whites firmly in the hunt for a European spot.
SCF head coach Christian Streich acknowledged that the Wolves were worthy winners but was still frustrated with the opening goal. His VfL counterpart Oliver Glasner, meanwhile, hailed his team’s concentration against highly-rated opposition.
Oliver Glasner: “I’m very happy. It was a very tough match against good opponents. We were very well organised over the 90 minutes, didn’t give much away and took our chances when they came. We were efficient up front and came away with the win, which is great.
“We had a lot of respect ahead of the match because across their last 10 matches, Freiburg had only lost once, away in Munich. That makes me all the more pleased with the team’s performance today and with the fact that this was our third win with a clean sheet in a row.”
Christian Streich: “Congratulations to Wolfsburg. They deserved their win. We started off very strongly and played very well in the opening 20 minutes. It was clearly a foul when Wolfsburg opened the scoring though – that’s what the video referee is there for. After that, in a tight match that we were very much holding our own in, suddenly it was 1-0 to Wolfsburg.
“Wolfsburg then created a second chance – a very well worked one – and we let in a second goal, which obviously was a real body-blow because VfL are a top team, even when they’re not in possession of the ball. We came out for the second half very strongly once again but couldn’t find the back of the net. Once Wolfsburg got the third, they could have made it four, and at the end of the day they deserved their win. It’s hard to swallow though – it felt like a much closer match than the scoreline suggests.”
