Contract extension number three: following on from Josuha Guilavogui and Jerome Roussillon, Wout Weghorst has also pledged his long-term future to VfL Wolfsburg by extending his contract by a further year to 2023. The Dutchman was the Wolves’ top scorer in the 2018/19 season with 17 goals.
“This is another bit of good news for all VfL fans,” said sporting director Marcel Schäfer. “Wout has continued the development he started at AZ Alkmaar with consistently good performances this season. On top of that, he embodies passion and commitment on the pitch. With that mentality, he’s an excellent fit for VfL Wolfsburg, which is why we’re delighted to have tied him down.”
'The right decision'
The 26-year-old striker joined the Wolves from AZ before the start of the 2018/19 season. He featured in every Bundesliga match, ending the campaign as the team’s top scorer with 17 league goals, as well as seven assists. The Green-Whites’ No.9 also netted once in the DFB Cup.
“When I came to Wolfsburg in the summer, I soon realised that my move was the right decision,” said Weghorst. “My family and I feel very happy here and I enjoy every minute that I get to spend on the pitch with this great team. I’m therefore really pleased to have extended my contract at VfL and I will do my best to continue to be successful with the team in the coming years.”
