“We want to win every match”

VfL Wolfsburg welcome 1. FSV Mainz 05 to the Volkswagen Arena for their last home game of 2020/21.

After securing their place in next season’s UEFA Champions League, the Wolves are determined to bring a superb 2020/21 campaign to a fitting conclusion when they take on Mainz at home on Saturday (kick-off 15:30 CEST). At his pre-match press conference, head coach Oliver Glasner discussed…

… personnel: “I was thinking about giving Pavao [Pervan] a game anyway because he’s always excellent in training and I didn’t rotate in the cup. That’s how we came to the idea of bringing Koen’s operation forward, allowing us to effectively gain almost a full week with a view to the new season. Fundamentally, however, I’ll pick a team I think has the best chance of winning the game. Apart from Koen, Renato Steffen and Bartosz Bialek, I’m happy to have everyone else available.”

… the opposition: “We’ve got a lot of respect for Mainz. They can play at a very fast tempo, are really quick in transitions and are extremely robust, both in defence and attack. They’ve absolutely deserved to steer clear of relegation after their fantastic second half to the season.”

… the final objective of a long season: “When you only take into account results in the second half of the season, we’re second in the table – and we want to keep it that way. And we can still finish with the second-best home record in the league. Of course it also matters whether we finish third or fourth overall in the standings, so there are still worthwhile goals. For me, it’s also important to go onto the pitch once again in the last home game with the confidence that we want to win every match.”
