“We want to win at Köln”

VfL head coach Oliver Glasner lays out the target for the opening match of the second half of the season at Köln.

VfL Wolfsburg return to Bundesliga action on Saturday 18 January (kick-off 15:30 CET) with a trip to 1. FC Köln. The Wolves ran out 2-1 winners in the reverse fixture and they have their eyes on three points again in the cathedral city. In Thursday’s press conference ahead of the first league game of 2020, Glasner discussed…

…the opening match at Köln: “I hope we’re ready. We’ll see the evidence of that on Saturday. Our target is clear: we want to win at Köln. It’s obviously not escaped our attention that Köln have shown a marked improvement. It’s certainly a nice, challenging first match to have. We want to pick up from where we left off before Christmas and come home with three points.”

…Josip Brekalo’s availability: “Josip has a hand injury but he was back in training today. He’ll get a splint and then there’s no reason he won’t be involved at Köln.”

…first impressions of Marin Pongracic and whether he’ll be involved against Köln: “Marin’s had an injury-plagued year and hasn’t trained or played much. He’s therefore significantly behind in his training. We didn’t sign him because we needed him three days later in Cologne. We want to build him up gently and get him into top form.”

…targets for the second half of the season: “We want to move up the table and carry on the things we’ve been doing well recently. Our defending, compactness and fitness are all very good. We want to get better at creating and taking chances. There were signs of improvement but we still didn’t pick up enough points. We have plenty to do.”

…opponents 1. FC Köln: “You can see they’re playing extremely aggressively and have gained new confidence. They got going at the end of the first half of the season. They possess a very experienced squad, with players like [Marcel] Risse, [Anthony] Modeste and [Jonas] Hector who have a lot of Bundesliga experience. On top of that there are young players with a lot of pace. Overall the team have a very good level of quality.”
