"We want to give our fans a present"

VfL Wolfsburg captain Josuha Guilavogui is eager to maintain his remarkable unbeaten run when the Wolves host 1. FSV Mainz 05 this weekend.

Bruno Labbadia's men are yet to lose a competitive game in 2018/19 when Guilavogui has played – a trend that continued when he made his comeback from injury against SC Freiburg last Saturday.

We caught up with Guilavogui for his thoughts on that remarkable run, the Green-Whites' points haul so far this term and the upcoming match with Mainz at the Volkswagen Arena on Saturday 16 February (kick-off 15:30 CET).

Josh, you were unable to play in the first couple of games this year due to injury, but you finally made your comeback against Freiburg. What was it like being out on the pitch again?

Josuha Guilavogui: "I feel great and it was a nice feeling to be back out there. We didn't win unfortunately, but we played very well as a unit."

The team only needs one more point to equal last season's total…

Josuha: "The coach told us that before the Freiburg game, that we were only a few points away. It's crazy that we've picked up so many points so quickly this season. Now we want to give our fans a present by winning on Saturday. If we do, then we'll be able to say we've got more points than we had in the whole of last season."

We just know that it's a lot easier in a game if you work very hard and intensively.

Why do you think things have been so much better this term?

Josuha: "We just know that it's a lot easier in a game if you work very hard and intensively. We were really fired up after our pre-season in the summer and after our winter training camp. We're just hungry to win, that's the most important thing."

You scored with a header the last time the Wolves faced Mainz at home. What are your hopes going into this weekend's meeting?

Josuha: "I just really hope we win. If we do that, I don't really care if I score or not [laughs]. Hopefully we'll play well so that we can stay near the top of the table. There are a lot of teams close to us in the standings, so it'd be great if we could string a few good results together.”
