VfL Wolfsburg have a packed schedule between now and the Christmas break, comprising five challenging assignments in the space of 14 days - starting with Saturday’s match at Mainz (kick-off 15:30 CET). Ahead of the visit to the MEWA Arena, head coach Florian Kohfeldt spoke about…

… the upcoming programme: “Obviously we’ve got some very significant fixtures coming up, because they could set us up for a successful season. We’ve just had a full week of training and the squad’s in a good position in terms of the players’ fitness. In that respect, the situation isn’t entirely comparable with the period immediately after I took over, but without doubt it’ll be a challenging and important week, which we’re very much looking forward to.”

… the team news: “Xaver Schlager is still out, Admir Mehmedi will be out until Christmas with muscular problems. Bartosz Bialek has joined in with training again but won’t be in contention until the New Year. Koen Casteels is feeling good again.”

… opponents Mainz 05: “We’re playing against a team who, in my opinion, are on an impressive run. Since Bo Svensson took charge, Mainz have been incredibly consistent and picked up a lot of points over the calendar year. They’re very much defined by their physicality; they’re very aggressive and play towards goal with purpose and pace, so they’re going to keep us busy.”

… the approach to the game: “We’re in a process of development. Nevertheless, we clearly have a requirement to also get results during this process, and we want to get back to that on Saturday. We need to produce what we showed against Dortmund, namely a certain purposefulness and tempo in our attacking play. If we can combine that with a clean sheet, then I’m very confident it will go our way.”
