“We’re making too many mistakes”

Oliver Glasner was understandably frustrated after witnessing his side go down to a last-minute defeat at home to Hertha Berlin.

Having taken a hard-earned lead through Admir Mehmedi, VfL were only in front for six minutes before Hertha equalised. The visitors then took all three points late on to leave the Wolves with a bitter aftertaste. The coaches’ reactions to the game:

Oliver Glasner: “We shouldn’t have lost this match. We put in a lot of effort to score past Hertha’s defence and our lead was thoroughly deserved, because in the second half in particular the game was played almost exclusively in Hertha’s half. But instead of getting a second goal we lost a decisive aerial battle – just as we did against Köln – and conceded the equaliser from a corner. We threw everything forward to win it after that, and you couldn’t have predicted the game would turn the way it did. We’re just making too many simple mistakes in defence at the moment. Now we’re all massively disappointed and unhappy with our start to the second half of the season.”

Jürgen Klinsmann: “It’s obviously an unbelievably valuable win for us. We’re in the middle of a relegation battle and have geared everything towards picking up as many points as possible as quickly as possible in order to get ourselves out of this situation. It looked like we would get a point until right before the end, and we’d have been happy with that. But the fact we took all three is huge for us when you look at results elsewhere.”
