“We need to be prepared”

Mark van Bommel on VfL’s first away league game of the season at Hertha Berlin.

After beating Bochum 1-0 on Matchday 1, VfL Wolfsburg travel to Hertha Berlin in their first away league game of the 2021/22 Bundesliga season on Saturday 21 August (15:30 CEST). At his pre-match press conference, head coach Mark van Bommel spoke about…

…personnel: “Paulo [Otavio], Bartosz [Bialek] and William are still a long way off. Felix [Nmecha] and Aster [Vranckx] aren’t yet at 100 per cent. Other than that, everyone’s fit.”

…his expectations ahead of the game: “Making predictions is always the hardest thing to do. Suddenly something happens in the first or tenth minute – like the red card in the match against Bochum – and then the game is completely different from what you expected. It won’t be easy. Hertha have worked very hard in recent years, bought good players and have a strong squad with a good philosophy.”

…potential recipes for success: “We need to be well prepared so we know more or less what’s going to happen on the pitch. You never know how an opponent is going to play or what they’re going to do, but the players have to know: If this happens, this is our approach. And if that happens, we need to react like this. You have to prepare the team so that no-one is nervous when they go out on the pitch. We won the game against Bochum and we want to win the game against Hertha too – and we want to do it our way.”

…improvements compared to the Bochum game: “That was a typical 11 v 10 game. We did well for an hour and could have made things easier for ourselves. We created eight golden opportunities – not small chances but very big ones – and simply should have put the game to bed earlier. We have to improve the way we take our chances.”
